Lets be clear from the start of this discussion.
TAB is not pro-gun or anti-gun. What we are is pro-Constitution together with its Amendments. Some feel the Constitution is
a “living” document. This means that Congress has the ability to change it by vote to keep it up to date with
modern times. This would require good judgment and foresight. Qualities today’s Congress is obviously lacking in due
to its love affair with special interests. TAB believes the Constitution and its Amendments are “timeless” documents.
That thru its words describes the rights and nature of human beings that have been true since the beginning of time. As such,
it has no reason to be updated or changed.
We, the American people, are truly blessed to have it as the blueprint of our government. The manner in adapting our government
to the times is thru the creation of laws and regulations. The key point here is, that in the creation of laws and regulations,
they cannot preempt, override, or walk on the Constitution and its Amendments.
To hear many legislators and anti-gun advocates discuss the 2nd Amendment you would
think the founding fathers included it to ensure hunting rights for citizens. During the so called “assault weapons”
ban of the late nineties, congress endeavored to allow only those guns which they deemed suitable for hunting. To be sure,
during the days of the founding fathers hunting was a popular past time for some and a necessity to provide food for others.
However, that’s not the reason the founding fathers deemed it absolutely necessary to put pen to paper in writing the
2nd Amendment. Plainly stating in it, noticeably without restriction, that American citizens have the right to
bear arms.
The reason they thought it
was so important is no mystery. They firmly believed in a citizens right to self protection. Both from the criminal element
and from the possibility of an oppressive government. In line with their feelings on the later, they also plainly stated,
without restriction ,that American citizens have the right to form private militias not under government control. Governments
corrupted by powerful special interests and self interest have been around almost since the beginning of man. The founding
fathers were more than familiar with them and how it could easily happen to The United States new government.
We are in no way suggesting that American citizens should
take up arms against our government. The founding fathers also gave us a way of bringing the government into line without
the need to take up arms. The founding fathers intended this as a last resort. We know this because they gave us the “vote“,
a powerful tool. TAB’s mission is to show the Congress and Senate just how powerful it is!
The point concerning arms is this. With the 2nd
Amendment the founding fathers intentionally took away the governments jurisdiction over what arms a law abiding United States
citizen could own. The government has no say in the matter according to the founding fathers.
If
the government has a concern over the illegal use of arms. The founding fathers gave it the ability to make laws directing
punishments for an individual who uses arms in an illegal manner. Congress has the right and obligation to create laws and
punishments which are sufficient to deter anyone from using arms in an illegal manner.
Considering the above, is there any reason not to dissolve the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and
Firearms. The government has no jurisdiction over firearms according to the 2nd Amendment. The only other reasons
for the ATF to existence is to enforce taxes on alcohol and tobacco. The IRS has proven to be very good at enforcing taxes.
Wouldn’t the ATF’s budget and personnel be better utilized by moving them to ICE and the Border Patrol?
